“We are saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and former colleague, Al Gross,” said Susan E. Voss, president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and Iowa insurance commissioner, in a statement.

The cause of death had not been determined.

Gross served as insurance commissioner for the Virginia State Corporation Bureau of Insurance for 14 years, starting in 1996. His tenure with the regulatory agency began in 1981.

“Al was an invaluable asset to the NAIC and a mentor to many fellow regulators,” Voss said. “He was a leader in financial regulation and highly regarded internationally for his contributions. State-based regulation is better because of him. While he was lauded for his tremendous regulatory expertise, Al was equally appreciated for his service and friendship.”

Last fall, Gross received the President’s Award for Distinguished NAIC Member Leadership in recognition of his exemplary leadership, sustained length of service and significant contributions to advancing the mission of the NAIC. Gross served on many committees of the NAIC during his years as insurance commissioner.

Gross was succeeded by Jackie Cunningham, a deputy in the department, who took over late last year.
